Babcock Ranch & The Environment

Babcock Ranch & The Environment

At Babcock Ranch, we care deeply about our surrounding environment and impact on not only Southwest Florida, but the entire world. We believe strongly in preserving as much as possible and completing development of the town of Babcock Ranch in ways that leave the smallest environmental footprint.

90% of the land on which we are building has been in use previously, which means that we are not bulldozing or destroying green environments. This is one of the main environmental concerns we receive and we wanted to share that on our blog to make everyone aware.

In the May 2016 issue of Gulfshore Business, senior resident fellow for sustainable development at the Urban Land Institute, a nonprofit research group that promotes responsible land use, Ed McMahan states:

“Sustainability is about more than technology, energy efficiency, and wind turbines. These are places that have respect for the land.”

These are the exact values we want to be instilled in everything we do at Babcock. However, we know that it will take more than words to do that. Here are some ways we hope to make that happen:

  • Babcock Ranch will run on solar energy using the FPL Babcock Ranch Energy Center – making Babcock Ranch the first solar-powered city.
  • Residents and visitors of Babcock will be able to easily access all of Babcock by foot or by bicycle. We want everyone to enjoy the outdoors and avoid using their vehicles as much as possible.
  • Farm-to-table lifestyles will be encouraged at Babcock. We plan to include a community farm for residents to grow their own produce.

There will be more to come in the way of sustainability and environmental friendliness at Babcock and we encourage you to share your thoughts, concerns, and ideas. Please contact us or share them in the comments below.
